New Article in Critica Liberale: From Natural Law to Digital Rights: Toward a New Liberal Humanism

I am pleased to announce the publication of my essay 'Dal diritto naturale ai diritti digitali: per un nuovo umanesimo liberale' [From Natural Law to Digital Rights: Toward a New Liberal Humanismin the 2025 Yearbook of Critica Liberale – the renowned Italian journal founded in 1969, a voice of secular and liberal thought.

The article traces the historical and philosophical evolution of the concept of liberty, from its natural law origins to the challenges posed by the digital revolution. Drawing on thinkers such as Benedetto Croce, Norberto Bobbio, Isaiah Berlin, and John Dewey, the author argues for a “new liberal humanism” capable of translating the ancient idea of human dignity into the language of data and algorithms.

The essay proposes five pillars for a future Liberal Charter of Digital Rights: informational self‑determination, algorithmic transparency, digital freedom and pluralism, equitable access to knowledge, and proportionality between security and liberty. It also discusses the transition toward a “society of prediction”, where freedom is measured by the ability to resist automation and to preserve human unpredictability.

The contribution appears in Critica Liberale, volume 32, issue 240 (7th series, No. 8), December 2025, pp. 97-104 (ISSN 1825-4977, ISBN 978-88-3383-548-8). The article DOI is 10.5281/zenodo.19349547.
