My new article, "Sovranità operativa e ordine policentrico nell'Unione europea: una lettura 'neomedievale'" (Operational Sovereignty and Polycentric Order in the European Union: A 'Neomedieval' Reading), has been published in Vol. 3, Issue No. 1 (January-April 2026) of Quaderni di Scienza Politica (ISSN: 1124-7959, EISSN: 2785-2776), doi:10.48271/120570, on pages 103–122.
The article offers a reinterpretation of the European Union's political structure through the lens of 'neomedievalism' – a theoretical paradigm that captures the coexistence of multiple sovereignties, overlapping jurisdictions, and 'fuzzy' borders. It develops the concept of operational sovereignty to describe how member states and EU institutions share sovereign prerogatives in the absence of a single centre of authority, thereby generating a polycentric order that challenges classical Westphalian categories.
